Netherlands opened their WC campaign with a 2-0 win over Denmark. The first goal was a own goal gifted bt the Danish. Simon Poulsen's attempted clearance hit the back of team-mate Daniel Agger to gift the Dutch the lead.At 85th minute, Dirk Kuyt was at right place at the right time to net in Elia's effort which hit the post.

Japan had thier first world cup win in foreign soil after beating the disappointing Cameroon 1-0 with a goal from Honda.

The current world champions Italy scrambled to a 1-1 draw vs Paraguay. There were fantastic celebrations from the Paraguay after their first goal. But during the second half De Rossi sneaked in and sealed a corner and gave the equaliser for Azzuri.
